It is November and friends call you excited that they went for a drive on the River "S" Unit of Ridgefield NWR in Ridgefield, WA (Clark Co.). They have some questions about birds they saw. Can you help them identify the birds?

Bird #1: They counted 31 large gray birds with dagger-like bills. They agued over whether they were cranes or herons. They add that they saw them in the water and the birds seemed to be hunting frogs, etc. Each was alone and they were spread about the refuge.
Did they see cranes or herons?

Bird # 2: Your friends see many ducks on their drive but are amazed by one species that sounds like a bunch of "rubber duckies" that babies play with. They don't remember much about the ducks except the white crown and the big bright green stripe behind each eye.
Can you help them with the "rubber ducky" sounding bird?

Bird # 3: They watched a flock of geese. They knew they were Canada Geese but there were 3 different ones among them. These geese were gray-brown with orange legs and white around their pinkish bills.
What species of geese were these?

Bird # 4: Later as they leave the refuge and drive through the farm lands, they see a group of about 30 or more large gray birds in the corn fields eating the left over corn. Now they are really confused.
Are these birds cranes or herons?
